NEW DATE - TWO WORLD PREMIERES We'll be premiering two works by Michigan-based comopser @grey.matter.noise: Futch, a hypersonic baroque original work for reed quintet; and There Was a Mystic Reality We Lived in Once, an arrangement of their ethereal saxophone quartet. Also on the program are two works inspired by nature: selections from the tree-based minimalistic Splinter by @marcmellits; and Thaw by @beckrose28, which evokes scenes from their trip to the Acadia National Park. "Momentos Peruanos" by @danielcuetomusic was the second work we chose to receive a special mention for the 2021 @calefaxreedquintet Composer Competition. We'll be performing it at our upcoming show on June 18! Make sure to get your ticket now at vanguardrq.eventbrite.com (link in bio) "Momentos Peruanos" is inspired by four traditional dances from the Andes Mountains to the Peruvian coast. We'll be pairing it with Daniel's other work for reed quintet, "Amaru," a musical portrait of a serpent-like deity from Incan mythology. Both works were originally written for the Kalliope Reed Quintet. ---------- Born and raised in Lima to a Peruvian father and American mother, Daniel Cueto ́s work is reflective of his broad cultural experiences within European, North American and South American music. His compositions have been described as “cleverly melding rich traditional Peruvian melodic and rhythmic elements with a contemporary flair, creating a personal style that is both pleasing and accessible to the listener and performer”. To date, his works have been performed in nineteen countries, including Germany, France, Spain, the UK, Malta, Argentina, Brazil and the USA.

Featuring guest bassoonist @danielz_1034 and music by Pietro Antonio #Locatelli, @danielcuetomusic, and @jeffscott9167 🎶 Tickets to join us in-person or watch the live-stream at vanguardrq.eventbrite.com (link in bio) ---------- A native of South Florida, Daniel Zaldana is a recent graduate from the University of Michigan and will be pursuing his Graduate degree from McGill University’s Schulich school of music in the fall. During his undergraduate studies at Michigan, Daniel had many opportunities to experience and learn from a variety of musical opportunities. Such as an extensive chamber experience performing with many different groups, learning more about arts administration work and working/volunteering with the outreach program through the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion office at SMTD. All these different experiences and all the people he had the wonderful opportunity to meet and connect with has greatly expanded his own ambitions and plans for his career ventures. Daniels feels that his love and appreciation for the arts was greatly nourished during his time at the Interlochen Arts Academy and Camp. Meeting and experiencing so many diverse artists and art forms from around the world for the first time made him truly realize how beautiful and amazing the arts and its community is, and more importantly, realizing how much of an impact and place the arts can have for all. Daniel strongly believes that the ability the arts have to connect people with each other is one of the most beautiful and important elements of the arts.

Following that, we present two works by Peruvian-American composer Daniel Cueto: "Amaru," a musical portrait of an Incan mythological figure; and "Momentos Peruanos," a collection inspired by traditional Peruvian dances. We close with Jeff Scott's "Homage to Paradise Valley," a tribute to a historically Black and musically rich neighborhood in Detroit.
