ANN ARBOR, MI — Vanguard Reed Quintet releases its debut album, Red Leaf Collection, on Friday, June 26, 2020. The full-length album features six world-premiere recordings of compositions for reed quintet, a chamber music ensemble comprising five woodwind instruments: oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon.

Works include From Lidless Eyes (time knows no bounds) by Douglas Hertz, Out of Bodies by Daniel Zlatkin, Red Leaf Collection by Karalyn Schubring, Self-Talk by Gala Flagello, be that empty by Karl Ronneburg, and red by Nina Shekhar. Each composer is a graduate of the University of Michigan composition department. The ensemble premiered compositions by Flagello, Zlatkin, and Shekhar at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY in August 2018.

Vanguard Reed Quintet is committed to breaking new musical ground, increasing the depth and diversity of the reed quintet’s core repertoire, and engaging audiences with innovative, adventurous, and inspiring musical experiences. The ensemble boasts a number of competition awards, including Silver Medalist at the 2018 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Second Prize and Michigan Prize at the 2017 Briggs Chamber Music Competition, and Honorable Mention at the 2019 Plowman Chamber Music Competition.

The ensemble recorded the album at First Presbyterian Church in Ypsilanti, MI in December 2018. It was recorded, edited, mixed, and mastered by Dave Schall Acoustic. The project is funded in part by the EXCEL Enterprise Fund at the Universities of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance and by individual contributions to the ensemble’s 2018 Kickstarter campaign.
